OSO is an architecture and interior design office founded in Tokyo in 2017 by Esteban Ochogavia and Michael Sypkens, who formerly worked together at Kengo Kuma and Associates. Esteban grew up in Brussels to Spanish and Portuguese parents; Michael in Tokyo to Dutch and Japanese parents. The Tokyo – Amsterdam – Brussels triangle shapes the office's pursuit of integrating radical concepts with fluid, intuitive interpretations of space.
OSO is drawn to the perception-focused, ever-incomplete world of Japanese design — the intuitive freedom and emotional directness of its art forms. The idea that an entire architectural tradition can be founded on transience and emptiness is as humbling as it is inspiring. Void is not the by-product of building but its objective; incompleteness is artful and resistant to fixed readings. We ground these ideas in clear concepts — not to resolve them, but to make their openness intentional.
OSO has worked closely with Yohji Yamamoto since 2017. Yohji Yamamoto is a client as well as a close collaborator with whom we have completed more than 50 projects together. Yohji Yamamoto's uncompromising creativity and layers of references has deepened the office's commitment to designing without conventional limits. Notable projects include the flagship store on Rue Cambon in Paris, the shop on Savile Row in London, and several expansive salon and retail spaces for the K11 group across Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.
OSO's architectural work ranges from high-rise towers to timber-frame houses, engaging both large international teams and local contractors through to construction. Across all scales, the work avoids conventional form — not to diminish it, but to give it a presence that shifts rather than settles. The largest completed building, a 25-storey tower in central Vancouver, is an attempt at a distinct identity that is not fixed.
OSO has a presence in Tokyo and in Amsterdam, the former led by Esteban and the latter by Michael. With roots in both Japan and Europe, the office is actively expanding its work across creative fields on both continents.
